Mud Brick Workshop on a Farm

Atelier briques traditionnelles - briques_blanc

A preserved family farm in the heart of the Agadir countryside opens its doors for a mud brick workshop that is as unusual as it is grounded in the earth, in every sense of the word. Oumayma welcomes you over a tea while showing you around her estate, filled with fruit trees and animals including her famous peacocks, before telling you how she swapped a career in the capital to take over the reins of the family farm. Then comes the heart of the workshop: raw earth construction, a thousand-year-old technique that makes it possible to build without machines or concrete. First you discover the material, a natural mix of clay, sand, straw and water, before moving on to the most sensory step: kneading the clay with your feet, an experience where you catch yourself dancing in rhythm to reach the perfect texture. Once the earth is ready, you learn to mould your own mud bricks using wooden frames: a gesture that looks simple, but calls for concentration and patience to produce a solid brick. You leave with an ancestral skill and the joyful memory of a connection with the Moroccan earth.

HOW TO PREPARE WELL FOR YOUR WORKSHOP

Wear comfortable clothes that can be stained without any worry! Bring a change of clothes for the children, who generally have a field day in the mud!

The workshop takes place outdoors and cannot be moved indoors: in the event of bad weather, it may be replaced by an Amazigh calligraphy workshop, or cancelled (and refunded, of course).

A few tips to avoid any awkward moments: in Morocco, men and women shake hands but do not kiss on the cheek.

You can combine this workshop with our other workshops at the farm (embroidery, Amazigh calligraphy or the cooking workshop) for a full day immersed in Amazigh culture, and/or add lunch before the workshop.

THEY TRIED THE AGADIR MUD BRICK WORKSHOP

AND THEY SAY IT BETTER THAN WE COULD!

"We spent a day at Oumayma's farm, and after the cooking class and the delicious meal, we took part in making traditional Berber bricks. What a joy for the children to put their hands and feet in the mud! It was so much fun, we highly recommend it for young and old alike! Thank you for the warm welcome, Oumayma!"
Sophie
"An immersion in nature and a fusion with the earth, to sum up this experience. We made bricks that will go into building a little shed. I highly recommend this restorative and fun experience, guided by Oumayma."

Bruno
"The workshop starts with a clear explanation of the materials and the ancestral logic behind this mix for building without concrete. Then you take off your shoes and knead the clay with your feet. It is a little unsettling at first, and honestly very funny. And seeing your bricks lined up in the sun at the end of the workshop brings real satisfaction. A completely extraordinary workshop."
