Amazigh Calligraphy and Alphabet Workshop

calligraphie_blanc

Just 40 minutes from Agadir, a family farm tucked away in the Moroccan countryside invites you to dive into the fascinating history of Berber culture through an open-air Amazigh calligraphy and alphabet workshop. Oumayma and her family welcome you over a traditional mint tea, before unveiling the thousand-year-old history of the Amazigh alphabet: born to give written form to a language that until then was purely oral, Tifinagh is today at the heart of a movement to restore and recognise Amazigh identity. The experience begins with the making of ancestral tools that are now almost forgotten: you will learn to cut and handle the calamus, this hand-shaped reed pen, and to prepare a traditional ink using an age-old technique passed down from generation to generation, whose secrets we will let you discover on site. Equipped with a chart matching the Tifinagh characters to the Latin alphabet, you will choose the words or names you would like to immortalise. In an atmosphere of serene concentration, your hands will touch a precious culture. You will leave with your creations on paper, but above all with the feeling of having brought a living Amazigh heritage back to life.

HOW TO PREPARE WELL FOR YOUR WORKSHOP

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you sit easily on cushions on the floor.

The workshop takes place outdoors among the olive trees, but will be held indoors in the event of bad weather.

A few tips to avoid any awkward moments: in Morocco, men and women shake hands but do not kiss on the cheek.

You can combine this workshop with our other workshops at the farm (embroidery, traditional brick-making or the cooking workshop) for a full day immersed in Amazigh culture, and/or add lunch before the workshop.

THEY TRIED THE AMAZIGH ALPHABET WORKSHOP IN AGADIR

AND THEY SAY IT BETTER THAN WE COULD!

"A great Amazigh calligraphy workshop, which we did alongside a cooking class, and which let us deepen our immersion in Berber culture! Discovering the Amazigh alphabet was child's play thanks to Oumayma's knowledgeable explanations and the matching charts. We left with our work, a lovely souvenir of our trip to Morocco!"
Stéphanie
"Thank you for this Amazigh alphabet workshop, so interesting from a cultural point of view: it was not just hands-on practice, the information at the start was truly enriching. And what can I say about the setting: doing this workshop among the olive trees was wonderful!"
Kelly
"This workshop is a history lesson on Tifinagh, the Berber alphabet that was long in danger of disappearing, and on the current movement to give it back its place in Moroccan daily and cultural life. It is fascinating, and it makes you want to do the next part well, namely learning to write the Amazigh alphabet in calligraphy! The workshop takes place outdoors, with only the birdsong in the background, a pure moment of bliss!"
