Nicknamed "the little Saint-Malo," clinging to the Atlantic Ocean, Essaouira, the former Mogador, is a historic port city. With its past as a trading post, its still very active port, the white and blue city thrives in a climate tempered by offshore winds. Its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, its souks, fortifications, and port make it a delightful city to stroll around.
Accompanied by an official guide, you will learn during your walks through the alleys, the fishing port, or the ramparts that Essaouira has experienced a glorious past. From a great diplomatic and commercial city to a gathering place for hippies, it was also a transit point for slaves, and Gnaoua music remains a symbol of the city. The city also hosted a significant Jewish community, and the three religions still coexist peacefully. Your guide will take you through several centuries of history that few people suspect, and introduce you to the artisans who today contribute to the city’s reputation. A visit as educational as it is enjoyable !
