Head north of Essaouira for a half-day in the cool shade of a Moroccan oasis! Nicknamed ‘The Spring of Stones’ because the water gushes out of the rocky ground, this oasis offers a unique chance to observe and understand rural life, local agriculture (in autumn, for example, you can watch the olive harvest), and the traditional irrigation systems. The walk lasts around two hours and takes you to a centuries-old argan tree, the natural spring itself (which was revived by the 2023 earthquake), and the stony hill where locals carve millstones to press olives, a craft born from the exceptionally hard and heavy stone found here.
Jujube, pomegranate, olive, tamarisk, prickly pear, reeds, and eucalyptus… each plays a vital role in the local ecosystem, economy, and craftsmanship. The tour concludes with Rachid’s family, who weave reeds into various items, including baskets. Each family member works with incredible dedication, and even the youngest children learn the craft during their holidays. You will watch them work at the weaving loom; their movements are swift, precise, and confident. A traditional snack with the family will bring this tasty and immersive experience to a delightful close!
