Meet your guide near Jemaa el-Fna square and dive into the fascinating world of Zellige, the ancestral Moroccan art that adorns the country’s most beautiful palaces and riads! You’ll be welcomed into a traditional workshop filled with the rhythmic sound of hammers to meet Mohamed, a passionate master artisan who will reveal the secrets of his craft. Mohamed will share the history of his trade and the vital role Zellige plays in Moroccan architecture. He will walk you through the entire production process: from firing and glazing the clay tiles to the meticulous hand-cutting and final assembly. It is a true labor of love where every tile passes through many skilled hands before reaching you. Then, it’s time for hands-on practice! After sketching your pattern, you will learn to hand-cut geometric pieces using the traditional marteline (tile hammer). It is a test of precision, patience, and strength that quickly becomes a captivating experience. You will then refine the angles and assemble your creation upside down, following the same traditional technique used in mosques and palaces. You will leave with a unique Zellige masterpiece handcrafted by your own hands, a memory of a true cultural exchange facilitated by your guide and translator.
