Berber bread-making workshop in Essaouira

Discover an authentic and immersive experience with Hafida. Throughout her childhood, this energetic young woman was immersed in Amazigh culture, helping her family make the precious argan oil and assisting her mother with cooking over a wood fire. As she grew up, she felt the desire to share this with curious travelers who she welcomes into her traditional home in the countryside south of Essaouira.

Put on traditional Berber clothing to immerse yourself in the culture, then head towards the nearby forest to collect small wood to light the traditional oven. Next, let Hafida or her sister Khalthoum guide you, and try your hand at kneading bread dough before baking it according to the Berber tradition (we won’t spoil the surprise !).

The best part? The tasting! Because there's nothing better than Berber bread, especially when accompanied by honey, argan oil, and amlou (the Moroccan version of Nutella)! This workshop is mainly an opportunity to discover traditional Berber life and chat with Hafida and her family, who are lovely !

A few tips to avoid faux pas: In Morocco, men and women shake hands but don’t kiss on the cheek. We eat with the right hand (unless using a fork). Shoes should be removed before stepping on a carpet. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, and women should avoid low necklines.

If you prefer to bring a small gift for your hosts instead of leaving a tip, local culinary or artistic specialties from your region are always a good idea.

Hafida and her family sell their own production of argan oil (for culinary and cosmetic use), amlou (a spread made from almonds, honey, and argan oil), and honey. Take the opportunity to buy local and bring quality products back home !

And above all, don’t eat too much before the experience!

THEY TRIED THE BERBER BREAD WORKSHOP

AND THEY SAY IT BEST!

"I loved this Berber bread workshop, and for someone who has never cooked before, it’s already a real little victory! The interaction between participants and with Khalthoum was more than conducive to sharing a fun and joyful time. And we enjoyed the fruit of our labor with a complete snack featuring tea, argan oil, amlou, jam, etc."
